Many physically active people, suffering with
spider veins
, are concerned that undergoing treatment will get in the way of their fitness routine. In the past, invasive vein surgery could keep a person off their feet for weeks; however with today’s advanced technology and treatment options, lengthy recovery periods are no longer the norm.
The main risk vein doctors in Lincolnshire want to avoid following spider vein treatment or sclerotherapy, is the failure of the treated vessels to close. In order for the procedure to be a success and rid the patient of damaged veins; the treated veins need to constrict and ultimately dissolve, rather than dilate and re-open. Therefore, patients are asked not to exercise, strength train or do anything that would cause their heart rate to climb for at least 24 hours after each procedure. After 2-3 days , patients are encouraged to resume their normal workout routine. Aerobic exercise helps to improve venous return to the heart and lowers venous pressure.
Safe exercises 2-3 days after spider vein treatment include:
- Walking
- Water Aerobics
- Swimming
- Yoga
- Light weight lifting
High-impact or “pounding” exercises, however such as running should be avoided for at least 3 to 5 days following treatment. Some vein doctors may also advise wearing
compression stockings
when doing intense physical activity.
