Veins are blood vessels responsible for returning blood from all parts of the body back to the heart. Varicose veins or “spider veins” are tiny veins that can pool with blood when they are unable to properly circulate the blood. These abnormal veins develop most commonly in the legs, but can form anywhere in the body.
Some spider veins are visible and bulge away from the skin. Small spider veins may appear on the surface of the skin. They can appear as “starburst” clusters, short lines, or a web-like maze. Spider veins are seen most often in the feet, ankles, and thighs. They can also develop on the face.
Spider veins develop when tiny valves inside the veins that are responsible for preventing back flow of blood fail to function properly. This causes blood to flow back into the veins and pool there, causing the veins to bulge. These veins are considered unsightly by most people and can also represent a health concern.
For many, spider veins are only a cosmetic concern. Other people with spider veins experience discomfort and aching pain. They may also lead to other, more serious problems. Their appearance may indicate a raised risk of other types of circulatory problems.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a common treatment for spider veins. It involves the injection of a solution into a vein. This solution makes the vein scar and collapse. As a result, blood is forced to begin flowing through healthy veins. The body then reabsorbs the collapsed veins into tissue nearby. The collapsed vein then fades.
Why is sclerotherapy performed?
Sclerotherapy is performed for cosmetic reasons. It can help improve the appearance of varicose veins or spider veins.
The procedure also helps improve symptoms related to spider veins, such as:
* Swelling
* Aching
* Night cramps
* Burning sensations
VeinGogh® Spider Vein Removal
VeinGogh® is a technique involving the generation of a tiny, high-frequency current transmitted to the vein using a very fine probe. A small amount of energy selects a vein and transmits heat into it. This has the effect of coagulating the blood and collapsing the wall of the vein, which is then rapidly absorbed by the body.
The treatment takes place without any negative effect upon the skin’s outer layers. The manner in which VeinGogh® treatment works means that patients may resume their daily activities very quickly following the procedure.
