Endovenous laser treatment or ablation is a procedure used for treating large varicose veins in the legs. It is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time than vein stripping. It works for over 94 percent of patients.
How Does It Work?
A laser is a tightly focused light beam that generates heat. Our medical professional aims the laser at the varicose vein, and its heat affects the vein. The affected vein develops closes off completely. As it is no longer receiving blood, the closed-off vein shrivels and is eventually reabsorbed by the body.
Types of Laser Treatments
Simple laser treatment is used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins on the skin’s surface. If the blood circulation in these veins is poor, the surgeon will have to first treat the larger “feeder” vein connected to them first. Endovenous laser treatment is one of the procedures often used for that.
Endovenous laser ablation is an outpatient treatment. The surgeon uses an ultrasound scanner to get a view of the vein. The surgeon will use a local anesthetic to numb the target site. A small tube or catheter is then inserted into the sound and moved toward the target site. The surgeon will then insert the laser fiber into the catheter and position it properly.
After completing the procedure, the surgeon will slowly withdraw the catheter and laser. They will bandage the treatment site, which will usually not need stitches. The procedure generally takes about an hour. The treated vein will typically close within a week. The surgeon will want to examine the patient with ultrasound to make sure they are healing properly.
What Is the Recovery Period Like?
The patient will be able to walk and otherwise resume their normal routine quickly. The patient will likely have to wear a compression stocking during the day for at least a week.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Endovenous Laser Treatment?
Endovenous laser treatment works best on large veins that don’t have a lot of twists and turns that make it hard to navigate the catheter. If the patient has small and/or twisty veins, they may need to undergo a different procedure. The ideal candidate for endovenous laser treatment will be in overall good health.
