If unsightly varicose veins have become an embarrassing problem on your legs or have begun to affect your quality of life, Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) can eliminate your problem veins without resorting to the invasive and painful procedures of the past.
At Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, we are proud to offer minimally invasive EVLT treatments to our patients for the effective elimination of varicose veins without pain, downtime or the need for general anesthesia. Under Dr. Richard Rosenfeld’s leadership, our staff is ready to offer you the expert vein treatment and service you will not experience anywhere else.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are a result of venous insufficiency and are characterized by bulging, twisting, protruding veins just below the skin’s surface. Veins utilize a system of one-way valves to prevent blood from flowing backward. Healthy veins use the natural movement and contraction of our leg muscles to propel blood upwards and back towards the heart, with the valves preventing the blood from flowing downwards with the force of gravity.
Because of aging, heredity, pregnancy and other factors, these all-important valves can malfunction, causing blood to flow backward and become stuck, pooling in veins located in the lower body. This excess blood becomes trapped and causes veins to swell and bulge, creating twisting and unsightly varicose veins. Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic concern, as they can cause skin irritation, swelling, pain and other problematic complications if left untreated.
The EVLT Procedure
EVLT uses laser energy to close the targeted veins and treat the underlying problem for immediate relief. EVLT is performed under local anesthesia without sedation. A small catheter is inserted into the affected varicose vein. Once the catheter is put into place through the guidance of ultrasound technology, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the catheter. The laser fiber to pass beyond the catheter, exposing its tip to the vein.
When heat is applied by the laser, the varicose vein begins to contract until it collapses. Once the vein is sealed off, blood flow is naturally redirected to deeper and healthier veins below the skin’s surface. The sealed off vein is then gradually absorbed by the body over the course of several months. The entire EVLT procedure typically lasts less than an hour.
Recovery and Results
The effects of EVLT are noticeable within a few days. Compared to traditional varicose vein treatments, including painful vein stripping or ligation, EVLT produces little potential side effects and minimal downtime. Bruising and sensations of tightness are common among patients but dissipate over the course of one to two weeks.
Following your EVLT procedure, you will be able to move around and resume most normal activities. You will be encouraged to resume normal activities after your procedure to promote healthy blood flow. Dr. Rosenfeld will give you specific instructions for you to follow after your procedure.
Compression stockings will need to be worn for about five to seven days to provide extra pressure to your veins as they continue to heal. Most patients are able to return to normal levels of exercise in about one week. Work can be resumed the very next day.
