If you have noticed the presence of bulging, twisting veins around your ankles or calves or regularly experience pain, aching and fatigue in your legs, then you may have venous insufficiency. While treatment used to be limited to painful vein stripping surgery, modern advancements in vascular medicine have allowed for the development of several minimally invasive methods that address venous disease without the need for surgery. With the use of radiofrequency, laser and chemical treatments, problem veins can be effectively removed from circulation without the need for downtime.
At Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, treating varicose and spider veins is our priority. Led by our resident vein expert Dr. Richard Rosenfeld, we can diagnose your vein issues and develop an individualized treatment plan that eliminates unsightly veins and improves your quality of life. Using endovenous chemical ablation, we can treat varicose veins located deep within the legs that other procedures may not be able to target successfully.
What Causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are a symptom of venous insufficiency, a common condition among both men and women. Venous insufficiency develops when the one-way valves responsible for keeping blood moving up the veins begin to weaken, allow blood to flow backward and pool in the legs. With the blood trapped in the legs, veins begin to swell and bulge outwards, creating unsightly and uncomfortable varicose veins. Some common symptoms of varicose veins include:
- Twisting veins that protrude from the skin
- Constant leg aching and itchiness
- Feeling of heaviness in the legs
- Skin discoloration
- Leg fatigue
While varicose veins can prove to be an unsightly nuisance, they can also result in health-related concerns due to improper blood circulation. When left untreated, venous insufficiency can also lead to painful skin ulcers and other serious conditions that require professional vein treatment. Several different methods exist for successfully managing venous insufficiency, and we offer the latest in vein health procedures at Advanced Vein & Laser Centre.
The Chemical Ablation Procedure
Endovenous chemical ablation is a procedure that combines sclerotherapy with the benefits of advanced ultrasound technology. Varicose veins do not always develop close to the surface of the skin and may not be visibly apparent. While endovenous laser treatment is an effective procedure for eliminating varicose veins, it is limited to targeting visible veins. With chemical ablation, we can diagnose and target problem veins found deeper within the legs that are out of sight.
During the chemical ablation procedure, Dr. Rosenfeld will locate the incompetent veins using ultrasound technology and safely eliminate them with chemical injections. Using a very fine needle, Dr. Rosenfeld injects a chemical agent called sclerosant into the veins. The sclerosant irritates the inner lining of the vein’s walls, causing them to stick together and seal off the vein. With the vein closed off from circulation, the body safely reroutes blood to healthier veins situated nearby. The treated vein is then gradually absorbed by the body.
Recovery and Results
Endovenous chemical ablation is a minimally invasive and gentle procedure. Treatment usually takes one hour or less, depending on how many veins are targeted at once. Most patients find the procedure to be tolerable without the need for anesthesia of any kind. Following a chemical ablation appointment, patients are able to walk out of the clinic and resume most normal activities immediately after, no downtime necessary. Most patients return to work the very next day.
Common side effects include bruising, swelling, tightness, itchiness and mild pain for two to three weeks. Patients will need to wear compression stockings day and night for three days, before switching to daily use for one to two weeks. Compression helps promote proper circulation and provides relief from the immediate side effects of the procedure. Elevating the legs for a few hours after treatment will also provide relief and help the legs recirculate the trapped blood from the varicose veins.
