Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is blood clot formed in a vein deep in the body. DVT most commonly affects the large veins in the legs and thighs. The clot that develops blocks blood flow, causing swelling, pain and varicose veins. However the biggest concern associated with DVT is the threat of it breaking off and traveling to other parts of the body, causing severe damage and the possibility of death.
Deep Vein Thrombosis may occur without any outward symptoms, but in most cases it will cause one or more of the following:
- Warming sensation
- Redness in the skin
Deep vein thrombosis can develop from long periods of sitting, especially during plane or car travel, following surgery, during periods of hospitalization when mobility is limited, following trauma to the legs or in patients with certain medical conditions effecting how your blood clots.
While the symptoms may seem manageable, it is imperative to seek medical attention immediately in the case of a DVT. Only a vein care specialist will be able to properly assess your condition and provide necessary treatment options.
Advanced Vein and Laser Centre offers complimentary screening for deep vein thrombosis and other potentially serious venous disorders.
