Results from Sclerotherapy Treatment
For those suffering from unsightly varicose or spider veins, sclerotherapy is a procedure that eliminates problem veins and redirects blood flow to healthier veins located deeper beneath the skin, out of sight. If you have bulging varicose veins or splotches of dark spider veins on your legs, Advanced Vein & Laser Centre can treat your venous insufficiency with an easy and relatively painless sclerotherapy procedure.
Venous insufficiency is responsible for forming the unfortunately common varicose and spider veins experienced by an estimated 50 percent of people. Especially common in aging individuals and women, venous insufficiency is caused by a decrease in blood pressure and the weakening of aging veins.
Veins are responsible for moving blood upwards and back towards the heart, often flowing against gravity. In order to do so, a system of one-way valves is utilized to keep blood moving in one direction and prevent it from moving downwards. As the body ages, these valves can weaken and allow blood to move in the wrong direction, pooling and creating excess pressure in veins located in the lower legs. This blood becomes trapped and creates varicose and spider veins.
Pregnancy, aging, heredity and a sedentary lifestyle are all common causes of venous insufficiency, making avoiding it entirely impossible. If you are suffering from venous insufficiency, sclerotherapy is capable of targeting the underlying causes and providing effective treatment.
Because sclerotherapy is a relatively painless procedure, no anesthesia is necessary. The treatment is performed in-office and typically lasts 30 minutes to one hour. During the procedure, a series of injections are made along the affected varicose or spider veins to treat them. Using a tiny needle, a chemical called sclerosant is injected in either liquid or foam form, irritating the inner lining of the veins and causing them to collapse.
After the targeted veins have been sealed shut from the sclerosant, blood flow is safely and naturally redirected by the body to other veins located deeper underneath the skin and out of sight. The collapsed veins are then absorbed by the body over the course of several months.
Three to six sclerotherapy treatments spaced one to two weeks apart are typically required to achieve optimal results. The number of appointments necessary is dependent on the number, size and type of veins treated. During an initial consultation, Dr. Richard Rosenfeld will determine how many treatments will be necessary to treat your venous insufficiency.
Recovery and Results
Immediately following your appointment, you will need to rest with your feet elevated for one to three hours to encourage healthy blood flow as your body reacts to the treatment. Most patients are able to return to work the next day. Strenuous activities will need to be avoided for the next few days.
Upon completion of your sclerotherapy treatment, results will develop over the course of six to eight weeks, with some results immediately noticeable. Compression stockings will need to be worn for three to seven days following treatment to add an additional layer of pressure that aids in healthy blood circulation.
