Will Insurance Cover Varicose Vein Treatment?
A common question from potential patients is “will my insurance cover the cost of varicose vein treatment?” They are usually pleasantly surprised to learn that varicose vein treatment, provided it is deemed ‘medically necessary’ is typically covered by most insurance companies. Spider vein treatment, usually completed for cosmetic reasons, is not paid for by insurance.
Below is the standard criteria most carriers will insist be met before coverage for varicose vein treatment is issued.
- Requiring a patient to try conservative therapy (compression, weight-loss, etc.) for six to twelve weeks, to see if their symptoms improve before providing coverage.
- Patients must have symptoms that cause pain or discomfort (i.e. swelling, pain, itching, burning, heaviness)
- Patients may need to undergo an ultrasound scan to identify and document venous reflux disease. Each insurance company has certain criteria for the minimum size a vein needs to be in order to qualify for treatment. A general range is 3mm or greater in diameter.
