The Progression of Vein Disease

Vein clinics in Chicago, and cities across the U.S., treat a large number of patients each year who have allowed their symptoms of vein disease go on for far too long. Some of these patients have tried to solve their painful varicose veins problem by using conservative treatment methods such as exercise and compression stockings. The problem remains that once these unhealthy veins form, they won’t go away on their own or with conservative treatment.

While early symptoms of vein disease, such as leg pain and spider veins, may seem minor the truth is they aren’t. Left untreated, these symptoms can worsen and lead to serious medical complications such as:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis- A blood clot that forms in veins below the muscles of the thigh and calf
  • Severe Edema – Abnormal fluid build-up in legs and feet, which can lead to bacterial infection of the skin.
  • Pulmonary Embolism- Sudden blockage of a major artery in the lung, usually by a blood clot.
  • Risk of Infection or Ulceration- A result of blood leaking into the tissue of the skin, causing swelling and damage to the tissue and resulting in a wound.

Early treatment to eliminate diseased varicose veins can aid in preventing these conditions from occurring or progressing to a more serious life or limb threatening condition.

Remember, vein disease will never “just go away” on its own, it is a progressive disease that will only get worse if left untreated. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to painlessly and effectively treat your varicose vein symptoms. At Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, our varicose vein doctors’ offer personalized, minimally invasive treatments, to successfully control venous diseases. How Will Vein Surgery Change My Blood Flow?

It is normal for those receiving varicose vein treatments to be a bit apprehensive. Often, patients are excited to be rid of their persistent leg pain and other bothersome symptoms brought on by vein disease, yet, there is still some anxiety over treatment. Many wonder what exactly will happen to their blood flow once veins are removed. The good news is varicose vein and spider vein sufferers in Gurnee needn’t worry, as blood flow actually improves when disease veins are removed.

There are many different non-surgical, minimally-invasive treatment options available to remove problem veins such as:

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Endo-Venous Laser Treatment
  • Thermal Ablation
  •  Compression Therapy

Obviously, the type and stage of vein disease will determine which procedure(s) are right for each individual. However, the goal of each treatment option is the same; to get rid of the diseased vein. Removing varicose veins in Gurnee patients will not cause diminished blood flow to the legs. In fact, once these unhealthy veins are eliminated, the blood will be re-routed into healthier veins and improve the rate of venous return to the heart.

It is important to remember that after receiving varicose vein treatment, moving your legs will not cause them harm. Daily activity is essential in maintaining healthy venous tone and to help ward off medical complications such as thrombosis (blood clots).

Regular daily exercise such as going for a walk or using an exercise bike will help patients in the gradual return to normal activity.  Prolonged bedrest after the procedure raises the risk of developing blood clots in the deep veins of the legs, a potentially deadly medical condition.

Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, your vein center serving Gurnee and the surrounding areas, has successfully treated thousands of patients with venous insufficiencies using procedures tailored to their individual needs. Assessing Your Need for Vein Treatment

Venous problems such as varicose veins are among the most common medical conditions seen in the U.S. While more than 30 million Americans suffer from venous disease, only a small percentage, 1.9 million, actually seek medical treatment from a vein doctor.

Many people are affected by varicose veins or spider veins in Grayslake but they aren’t sure what to do about these abnormal veins.  Those afflicted with varicose veins usually see them as nothing more than a cosmetic nightmare, not realizing the unsightly veins are actually causing their chronic leg pain in Grayslake. Some individuals endure the discomfort of varicose veins afraid treatment will be painful and lead to less than stellar results.  The fact is, thanks to relatively new, minimally invasive treatments like endovenous laser treatment and sclerotherapy; vein clinics are able to rid folks of their unwanted veins, virtually pain-free!

The goals for both patients and vein doctors are the same: to relieve venous insufficiency symptoms such as burning, aching, heaviness, and swelling and to improve the cosmetic appearance of the leg.

If you are currently experience any of the following:

  • Burning or itching of the leg skin
  • Leg pain in Grayslake, aching or cramping
  • Leg or ankle swelling, especially at the end of the day
  • Heavy feeling in the legs

It is important you schedule an appointment with a qualified vein doctor at your local vein clinic to prevent the progression of varicose veins and the damage that accompanies it. At Advanced Vein and Laser Centre, our minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments can quickly and safely rid our patients of leg pain in Grayslake. Superficial Thrombophebitis

There are two main types of vein systems: superficial veins and deep veins.  Superficial veins lie just below the surface of your skin, above the muscle where as deep veins, as you might expect, are found below the muscle. These two vein systems play a central role in the circulatory system; by delivering blood throughout the body. However, damaged valves in your veins can cause blood to flow the wrong direction, back down your veins and away from your heart (called reflux). Eventually, pressure builds up in the damaged veins and causes blood to pool. This pooling of blood creates a host of problems, ranging from leg pain in Gurnee patients to the formation of varicose veins and spider veins in Gurnee residents.

Often if a disruption in blood flow happens within a superficial vein, the vein can become inflamed.  This inflammation can lead to a condition known as superficial thrombophebitis, where a blood clot forms in the irritated vein. Superficial thrombophebitis is most commonly seen in the saphenous vein, a vein running along the inner leg from hip to foot. Patients with pre-existing varicose or spider veins in Gurnee are more prone to developing this condition.

You may be suffering from superficial thrombophebitis if you are experiencing leg pain in Gurnee or any of the following symptoms:

  • a swollen calf or thigh
  • pain or tenderness
  • an enlarged vein
  • warmness in the skin  (caused by inflammation)
  • a change in the color of your skin

If you are experiencing any number of these symptoms it is important to visit a vein doctor in Gurnee to have your symptoms properly diagnosed and treated. If left untreated, superficial thrombophebitis can lead to the development of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially deadly medical condition.

Compression Stockings: One Size Does Not Fit All

It may seem like a fairly simple process: take leg measurements, use the manufacturer’s guidelines to determine the level of compression and choose a style. However, ensuring a good fit for compression stockings is vital and not something patients should be doing by themselves.

Since compression levels range from 10 to 30 mm Hg and above; sizing needs to be individually based. For example, some patients may only need “light-pressure” support pantyhose to prevent or reduce mild swelling. At the other end of the spectrum are candidates for “prescription-strength” compression stockings, who suffer from significant swelling or venous leg ulcers. In each case, a vein doctor in Round Lake needs to properly diagnosis and accurately measure patients when fitting compression hosiery.

Here is a compression stocking checklist for patients to observe when being fitted by their vein doctor in Round Lake and the surrounding areas:

  • Did he/she measure and fit the stockings according to the manufacturer’s recommendation?
  • Did he/she document leg measurements and stocking size at baseline?
  • Did he/she check the stockings to ensure correct usage and adequate circulation?
  • Does he/she review measurements regularly to check for swelling and excessive pressure from the stockings?
  • Did he/she remind patient to remove the stockings and performing a skin assessment before 24 hours has passed?
  • Did he/she evaluate patient in a seated position to help determine if the stockings are acting like a tourniquet?

By visiting a vein clinic in Round Lake, you can ensure you knowledge to properly apply, manage, and remove compression stockings without risking serious complications. At Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, a vein clinic in Round Lake, our venous experts have years of experience treating community members with leg pain in Round Lake, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire and the surrounding cities.  Whether you need compression stockings or treatment from our minimally invasive procedures, we will have you back on your feet, allowing you to live your life without leg pain in Round Lake and the greater area. Genetics and Varicose Veins

One of the most common questions our specialists at Advanced Vein and Laser Centre hear is: are varicose veins hereditary? The answer is yes, you can probably blame your family genetics, at least in part, for the development of those bluish veins in your legs.  Genetics is the most common factor in developing varicose veins and the cause of more than 50 percent of all cases of varicose veins. Unfortunately, there is not much a person can do to avoid genetic predisposition to varicose veins. If there is a family history of them, then the risk is greatly increased. Other risk factors that increase the likelihood of varicose vein development are standing professions, age, multiple pregnancies, and hormone therapy.

While you may have little control over some risk factors such as genetics, there are other lifestyle modifications you can make to reduce your risk of developing unsightly varicose or spider veins in Round Lake. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Regular exercise for the legs – walking, running, biking and swimming
  • Wearing well structured shoes to support feet and legs
  • Wearing compression stockings
  • Incorporating walking or stretch breaks in between long periods of sitting or standing

So you may not be able to blame your parents for this one entirely, since some of the increased risks for varicose veins may be from lifestyle issues. Whatever the cause of your venous insufficiencies, at Advanced Vein and Laser Centre our minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments can quickly and safely rid our patients of leg pain in Round Lake. Menopause and Varicose Veins

For many women the idea of menopause may seem familiar and foreign all at the same time. Menopause is a life change that all women go through yet some simply associate it with the idea that their childbearing years are over. Often, the other health implications such as an increase in cardiovascular risks are overlooked.  It is imperative to become familiar with the variety of health issues that may occur during menopause including the development of varicose vein in Vernon Hills’ women.

Varicose veins in Vernon Hills residents are not directly isolated to the onset of menopause. In fact, they are a health alignment that affects both men and women. However, in menopausal women, there can be a worsening of this common health complication that warrants a visit to a vein doctor in Vernon Hills.

During menopause, many hormonal changes go on, primarily a decrease in the production of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries. The hormone reduction women experience during menopause may disrupt hypothalamic function, causing symptoms of hot flashes, loss of bone density and episodes of fatigue or depression.

A lessening of these hormones in the body during menopause can also lead to deterioration in one’s leg health. The hormones estrogen and progesterone are thought to have positive effects on the circulatory system, especially the veins in our legs. Therefore some medical professionals believe the decreased levels of these vital hormones during and after menopause may contribute to the development of varicose veins in Vernon Hills patients.

Preventive measures women can take to reduce varicose vein development include:

  • Regular exercise for the legs – walking, running, biking and swimming
  • Quitting Smoking
  • Keeping the legs and feet elevated when sitting

At Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, we specialize in the treatment of varicose veins in Vernon Hills and the surrounding communities. There are a variety of minimally invasive procedures, such as endovenous laser treatment and sclerotherapy, available to easily and effectively treat varicose veins in Vernon Hills and the greater area. What Is Varicose Eczema?

Varicose Eczema is a chronic inflammation of the outer layers of the skin due to increased venous pressure in the legs. Often, the underlying cause of venous eczema is venous reflux or varicose veins in Libertyville patients. Venous reflux occurs when valves in the leg veins weaken and allow blood to flow in the wrong direction.  As the blood falls the wrong way, back from the heart and down the veins, it hits the skin’s capillaries causing inflammation and the development of varicose eczema.

At Advanced Vein and Laser Centre, we have treated hundreds of patients dealing with leg pain in Libertyville due to varicose eczema.

If you are suffering from varicose eczema, you may be experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Dry or itchy skin
  • Rash usually consisting of red or scaly areas of skin
  • Oozing or crusting of the skin
  • Rusty brown patches of discoloration
  •  Skin may feel hard, tight or swollen

These symptoms are common in venous eczema as the condition causes poor circulation and fluids to build up. Over time, this build up of fluids affects the skin.  Although varicose veins in Libertyville patients may not be visible on the skin’s surface, “hidden varicose veins” are often found if investigated with venous ultrasound. If you fear that you may have varicose eczema, visit a vein doctor in Libertyville for a consultation. At Advanced Vein and Laser Centre, our healthcare professionals specialize in venous procedures, such as ultrasound imaging to accurately diagnose and treat venous insufficiencies.

Remember, the key to curing varicose eczema is by controlling the underlying condition. The first step is to schedule a visit with your vein doctor in Libertyville. Call Advanced Vein and Laser Centre at 847.367.4040 or contact us online and rid yourself of leg pain in Libertyville today!

What Causes Leg Cramps at Night?

If you’ve ever been awakened in the night by unpleasant, sometimes excruciating contractions of the calf and foot muscles, then you know just how painful leg cramps can be. There are several causes for leg pain in Mundelein patients such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  •  Medications
  •  Circulation problems of the arteries or veins.

Many people experience the occasional night cramp which is not always indicative of a serious underlying condition. However, it is recommended that you visit with a venous specialist if you are having frequent muscle cramping or leg pain in Mundelein as these can be signs of vein disease.

Healthy venous circulation occurs when the pressure of the foot on the floor acts as a pump simultaneously contracting the calf muscle which is then used to drive blood up the veins.  As the blood is propelled up the veins, one way check valves open and close directing blood up the leg veins and stopping it from flowing back down. But if a patient in Mundelein has varicose veins or another venous insufficiency, the check valves are broken allowing the venous blood to reflux back down the veins.  This pooling of venous blood is a source of the symptoms of vein disease including leg pain in Mundelein patients.

While many people suffer with leg cramping and venous reflux, these symptoms of venous insufficiencies often go undiagnosed if varicose veins in Mundelein patients are not noticeable on the skins’ surface. Remember, the symptoms of venous disease range from subtle to obvious—leg cramps, leg swelling, achy legs, skin changes in color and texture, bleeding varicose veins, leg ulcers, spider veins even superficial blood clots (SVT).

If you have leg cramping or leg pain in Mundelein, Advanced Vein and Laser Centre can help. Our healthcare professionals specialize in a number of venous procedures that are quick, painless and effective. Contact Advanced Vein and Laser Centre at 847.367.4040 or online to set up an appointment and cure your leg pain in Mundelein and the surrounding area today!

Qualities to Look For When Choosing a Vein Specialist

Deciding to seek medical treatment for vein disorders, such as venous disease and varicose veins can bring physical and emotional relief to those suffering. However, there are several factors patients with varicose veins in Gurnee and the surrounding area, should consider before selecting a doctor to provide treatment.

The Right Doctor

Many health providers now offer some degree of vein treatment but not all providers are equally qualified to manage varicose vein disease.  Look for a doctor who has specialized exclusively in treating venous disease, as opposed to a general doctor. During consultation with a vein doctor, inquire about cases that he or she has dealt with that have been comparable to yours.

Board Certification

A vein doctor performing treatment for venous disease or varicose veins in Gurnee patients should be a Diplomat of the American Board of Phlebology. This ensures your doctor has the appropriate medical training, experience, and is current on modern medical practices.

Comprehensive Treatment Options

Patients should select a physician who treats a wide spectrum of venous disorders. While certain procedures are suitable for treating varicose veins, other methods are more effective in treating spider veins in Gurnee patients. Search for a vein doctor in Gurnee, who provides several treatment options to ensure all of your damaged veins can be effectively treated by one doctor.

Dr. Richard D. Rosenfeld of Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, a vein clinic treating those in Gurnee and the surrounding area, has developed the premier practice for the treatment of varicose and spider veins. Dr. Rosenfeld is board diplomat of The American Board of Phlebology and is an active member of The Illinois Medical Association, The Lake County Medical Society and The American College of Phlebology.

With over 30 years of medical experience, Dr. Rosenfeld knows how important it is for a patient in Gurnee with spider or varicose veins to select a doctor they trust. Dr. Rosenfeld invites you to visit the Advanced Vein and Laser Centre to discuss any vein problems you may be experiencing.
