Are Varicose Veins and Restless Leg Syndrome Related?

About 10 percent of adults in the United States suffer from moderate to severe restless leg syndrome. It is a disorder typically affecting the calves, thighs and feet, and sometimes even the arms. The following is a list of sensations commonly experienced in individuals with restless leg syndrome:

  • Throbbing
  • Pulling
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Crawling
  • Electric Shock

In restless leg syndrome, sensations are usually alleviated by movement, giving the condition its name.  Individuals have a constant desire to move or stretch, making it difficult for them to sit still for any given period of time. Symptoms are especially bad at night, when a person is relaxing or trying to sleep.
When an individual comes to see a vein doctor in Gurnee with symptoms associated with restless leg syndrome, one of the first parts of the examination is a visual search for signs of varicose veins. If there are no outward signs of vein problems, an ultrasound can be done to see if there is any damage beneath the surface of the skin. Poor blood circulation is one of the leading causes of restless leg syndrome, so it’s best to have a vein doctor in Gurnee check your veins for any insufficiencies. Restless leg syndrome can also be caused by other conditions, such as diabetes, kidney failure, pregnancy or medications.
If varicose veins are the root of the problem, they can be cured with minimally invasive treatments. After a short consultation, a vein specialist will decide on a personalized procedure to best treat your varicose veins. Advanced Vein & Laser Centre, a vein doctor to Gurnee and the surrounding area, offers a number of minimally-invasive procedures that are quick and painless, and will rid you of the irritating symptoms associated with restless leg syndrome.
